How to Measure Your Truck Bed for a Tonneau Cover
Measure inside the bed, identify the rail equipment and match the exact cover application. Avoid ordering by cab style or a rounded size alone.
Before you order a tonneau cover, measure the bed. That sounds obvious, but “crew cab” and “short bed” aren't precise enough to identify every cover. The same truck model can have multiple bed lengths, and product titles don't always use identical size labels.
A few minutes with a tape measure and some photos can prevent a much bigger shipping and installation headache.
Measure the inside length
With the tailgate closed, measure straight along the inside of the bed from the front bulkhead to the inside face of the tailgate. Record the measurement in inches. Don't measure to the outside of the tailgate or include its thickness.
Compare that measurement with the manufacturer's fitment guidance for your exact truck. Keep the actual measurement rather than changing it to a rounded label too early. If the label and measurement seem inconsistent, confirm before ordering.
Identify the equipment around the rails
Look for a factory track system, bed caps, a drop-in liner, a toolbox, cargo rack or existing cover rails. Take photos of the front corners and both rails. These details can affect which kit or mounting arrangement is appropriate.

Check the year and bed configuration together
A correct length doesn't establish the entire fit. The cover also needs to match the truck's generation and bed design. When comparing listings, use the exact manufacturer part number and application rather than a product-family name such as MX4.
If your truck has equipment that changed within a model year, mention it when asking for help. The more specific the information, the less likely you are to be sent back for another measurement.
