Tesla Model 3 and Y Shocks: Questions Before Upgrading

Before changing Tesla Model 3 or Model Y shocks, check fitment, axle position, existing suspension and what you want to change about the ride.

If your Tesla's ride isn't what you want, buying shocks is one possible step—not the diagnosis. Start by describing the problem clearly. Is the car bouncing after a dip, hitting sharply over broken pavement, making a noise or feeling different than it used to?

Those descriptions help a suspension shop decide what to inspect. They also help you avoid expecting one part to fix several unrelated issues.

Check the basics before choosing parts

Have tire condition, pressures and the existing suspension inspected. Use the vehicle's specified pressures and equipment guidance rather than reducing pressure to mask a ride complaint. A new noise, vibration or sudden handling change deserves inspection before an upgrade plan.

Tell the shop about previous suspension work, wheel changes and any springs already installed. Keep the part numbers if you have them. An aftermarket spring changes the conversation from a straightforward stock replacement.

Don't read “17+” as unlimited fitment

Our KONI listings use broad starting-year language in their titles, but the detailed application information is more specific. Check that information and the current KONI application finder for your exact vehicle. A newer model year or refresh shouldn't be included by assumption.

Model 3 and Model Y also need to be identified separately. Sharing some components doesn't mean every suspension part or setting is interchangeable.

Build the complete parts list

The linked KONI range has separate front driver-side, front passenger-side and rear listings. Make sure the quote identifies each position and the quantity required. Ask which mounts, boots, bump stops or other pieces will be reused and which need replacement.

If you're comparing adjustable shocks, ask how the exact part is adjusted and whether access requires removal. Don't choose a setting by a generic video for a different KONI model. Keep the product instructions with the installation records.

Set a realistic goal

“More controlled on the commute” is a useful starting point. “Soft over every bump and flat in every corner” is harder to turn into a sensible parts choice. Explain where you drive and which compromise matters most to you.

  • Confirm year, model, drivetrain and suspension configuration.
  • Ask for a matched plan across the required axle positions.
  • Include labor and any required alignment in the budget.
  • Have the work performed by a shop familiar with the vehicle's lifting and service procedures.

I'd choose a setup based on a clear problem and a verified application. A different shock may suit your priorities, but no honest recommendation can promise the same ride result for every wheel, tire and spring combination.
